The Grudge

The woman was killed by her husband for being in love with Peter. The husband then killed their son, and then hung himself. Peter killed himself because he realized this and saw the dead bodies. Karen returns to the house to save Doug, but the woman kills Doug and goes to kill Karen. Karen knocks over the gas cans and lights the house on fire. At the hospital, the police bring Karen to ID the body of Doug. One of the police mention that they were able to save the house, and although Karen somehow survived the fire, she is visited by the woman one last time. We can assume that the woman kills Karen, because since the house is still standing the curse remained.

Revealing mistake: When the detectives were listening to the message on the answering machine, we heard it say the date was Thursday and states a time the message was left. When the camera shows the answering machine, you can see the display blinking between 1 (the current message) and CL (which indicates the time and date have not yet been set).

Question: How come Karen goes into the past to see the husband kill his wife and son?

Answer: I don't think she actually went back into the past, I think it was just the house showing her what happened, or at least a type of visual echo of what happened. After all, some pretty strange stuff was happening in that house.
