Trivia: Kathleen Turner almost didn't take the lead role because she finds gory movies too disturbing. At first she said she would only be in the film if the violence was portrayed cartoonishly and unrealistically. Director John Waters convinced her that the violence needed to be portrayed very realistically, because that would be even funnier... the absurdity of so much twisted violence coming out of a seemingly perfect sitcom-style housewife. Turner eventually agreed with Waters and signed on.

Trivia: The video store you see in this film is director John Waters' actual neighbourhood video store.

Trivia: Matthew Lillard plays the titular "Serial Mom's" son. Two years later, he would go on to play one of the serial killers in the famous slasher-satire "Scream."

Continuity mistake: During the trial when Beverly is cross-examining Mrs. Ackerman, her neighbor, she asks if those were her scissors found sticking out of Mrs. Sterner's stomach. That's not where the scissors should have been found. After stabbing Mrs. Sterner with the scissors, Beverly pulled them out and threw them at the husband twice, both times they ended up sticking in the walls, and that is where the scissors would have been found when the police arrived.
